“The launching ceremony of the 150th Anniversary Celebration of Taiping Town will be held on January 20th at the Taiping Heritage Square.
“It will be officiated by the Menteri Besar Perak, Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and various program highlights have been planned throughout the day,” he said.
Further commenting from Khairul Amir, the date was chosen as a symbolic mark for the establishment of Taiping town on January 20, 1874, in conjunction with the end of the Fourth Larut War in 1873.
This is also related to the Pangkor Agreement concluded between the British and Perak.
“The establishment of Taiping as the capital of Perak has left many historical impacts, to the extent that this town is now recognized as a Heritage Town.
“Among the remnants of British administration in Taiping are Bukit Larut, Taiping Hospital, Taiping Lake Gardens, English Schools, Taiping Prison, Perak Museum, railway tracks, Telegraph Office and the Central Market.
“With the official celebration slogan ‘Preserving Heritage Amidst Urbanization’, we welcome the public’s presence to enliven the program that will take place throughout the 150th Anniversary of Taiping Town,” he said.
